Description:

Blooming in fall, this medium to large, semi-evergreen shrub produces white fluffy female, and inconspicuous male flowers on separate plants; seeds spread by wind, so undesirable spread could occur; salt tolerant, and can be used on wet or dry sites

Ornamental Features

Groundseltree is bathed in stunning clusters of white flowers at the ends of the branches from late summer to late fall. It has grayish green deciduous foliage. The serrated oval leaves do not develop any appreciable fall color.

Landscape Attributes

Groundseltree is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition.

This is a relatively low maintenance shrub, and should only be pruned after flowering to avoid removing any of the current season's flowers. It is a good choice for attracting birds and butterflies to your yard, but is not particularly attractive to deer who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. Planting & Growing

Groundseltree will grow to be about 10 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 10 feet. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 1 foot from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 30 years.

This shrub should only be grown in full sunlight. It is quite adaptable, prefering to grow in average to wet conditions, and will even tolerate some standing water. This plant does not require much in the way of fertilizing once established. It is not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in sandy soils, and is able to handle environmental salt.
